Why the age on 1 January matters
The government school admission policy 2027 says a child should be 6+ years old for Class 1. The policy then fixes the exact check: on 1 January of the academic year, the age must be at least 5 years and at most 7 years. It is not the age on the application date or the lottery date, so a birthday after 1 January does not help for that year. Read the full rules in our School Admission Policy 2027 guide.
Age rule for Class 1 at a glance
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Age for Class 1 | 6+ years (National Education Policy 2010) |
| Date used for counting | 1 January of the academic year |
| Minimum age on that date | 5 years |
| Maximum age on that date | 7 years |
| Special needs students | Up to 5 extra years of maximum age |
| Proof of age | Attested copy of the online birth registration certificate with the application |
Age is checked for every class, not only Class One. Under the Ministry of Education notification of 13 October 2026, a child applying for Class One in 2027 must be 5 to 7 years old on 1 January 2027. For Class Two to Class Nine, the age ranges below apply. Age is counted on 1 January 2027, and you must submit a certified copy of the online birth registration with the application. Children with special needs can get up to 5 years of age relaxation. Class One is filled by lottery, while vacant seats in Class Two to Nine are filled through a written admission test based on merit.
| Class | Age on 1 January 2027 |
|---|---|
| Class One | 5 to 7 years (6+ as per the National Education Policy 2010) |
| Class Two | 6 to 8 years |
| Class Three | 7 to 9 years |
| Class Four | 8 to 10 years |
| Class Five | 9 to 11 years |
| Class Six | 10 to 12 years |
| Class Seven | 11 to 13 years |
| Class Eight | 12 to 14 years |
| Class Nine | 13 to 15 years |

The policy does not say how a child a few months past 7 is treated, so our calculator shows a yellow message for those children instead of a firm yes or no. Wait for the official circular before you decide.
Children with special needs
The policy allows up to 5 extra years for students with special needs when the age is decided. In the calculator, tick the special needs box and the maximum becomes 12 years. Valid proof from the proper authority is needed, and there is also a 2% quota for these students. Use our Quota Checker to see it.
What about Class 2 to 9?
The policy says the age for all other classes must be counted in the same way, using 1 January of the admission year. It does not print a separate age table for each class. As a simple guide, add one year to the Class 1 range for each higher class. For example, Class 2 is roughly 6 to 8 years. This is our own reading, so confirm it in the circular of your school or committee.
Documents you need to prove age
- An attested copy of the online birth registration certificate, submitted with the online application form.
- Make sure the name and date of birth on the certificate are correct before you apply. Correcting a certificate can take time.
- Special needs and quota proof, if you claim them (see the Quota Checker).
